lndigenous Cultural Centres

Consultations have commenced for

  • an lndigenous Cultural Centre in Darwin and
  • a National lndigenous Cultural Centre in Alice Springs.

The lndigenous Cultural Centre in Darwin will celebrate, showcase and preserve the rich cultural history, heritage and identity of the Traditional owners of Darwin and its surrounds, the Larrakia people, and potentially other Top End lndigenous cultures that might be represented through the Centre.

The Centre may incorporate elements of the local Larrakia culture including the natural environment, history, language, livelihoods, and linkages to other lndigenous groups and cultures. lt will also provide opportunities for local performances, events, displays and engagement with visitors including other lndigenous and non-indigenous groups.

The Centre also has the potential to be of multi-use benefit, featuring for example, live performances, art and cultural activities, public information, education (particularly local students), research and other activities.

The purpose, location, design, interpretive elements, management, governance, financing and other matters involved in developing a Cultural Centre will be considered in the consultation process.

Consultation will shortly commence in Alice Springs around the National lndigenous Cultural Centre. This consultation will later broaden to include the wider Territory and Australia.
