The Blue Shield is the cultural equivalent of the Red Cross.
It’s the protective symbol specified in the UNESCO 1954 Hague Convention for marking cultural sites to give them protection from attack in the event of armed conflict.
It’s also the name of the International Committee of the Blue Shield (ICBS) set up in 1996.
In 2005 the Blue Shield Australia (BSA) committee was formed with a mission to influence disaster preparedness and emergency management in Australia in relation to threats of all kinds, in order to ensure the preservation of cultural heritage in Australia's area of responsibility and interest.
The Council of Australasian Archives and Records Authorities (CAARA) comprising the heads of the government archives authorities of the Commonwealth of Australia, New Zealand and each of the Australian States and Territories has been an active supporter of BSA and its mission since September 2005.
Each year, BSA holds an annual campaign during the month of May to raise awareness about disaster preparedness in the cultural heritage sector.
The campaign urges all Australian archives, galleries, libraries, museums, cultural heritage sites and organisations to perform at least one task to prepare for a disaster each year.
