Value of archives to the community
Recently the Northern Territory Archives Service (NTAS) sought input from the public about the value they placed on archives.
The feedback was very positive and formed the basis for the presentation The Value of Archives to the Community .
In 2010 a significant acknowledgement of the value of archives came with the United Nations Universal Declaration on Archives, recognising the key role that archives play in administrative transparency, and democratic accountability, as well as the preservation of collective social memory.
The community values archives
Even if they never visit the archives, members of the community like to know that the archives exist, taking care of all 'our history'.
There is a legislative requirement for government to record its business, for the purposes of accountability.
The NTAS is responsible for the preservation and safe keeping of government’s valuable records. The government needs archives as the role of archives being integral to the accountability and the history of government and its evolution.
NTAS also holds community archives. This component of the archives gives everyone, from all walks of life, not only government officials, an opportunity to become part of the retained history of the Northern Territory (NT).
Archives tell the story of NT
The story of the NT will be available through the archives for generations to come.
The NTAS Oral History collection is an amazing example of this retained history. The oral history collection includes stories of people from all walks of life, covering all parts of the Territory, telling their own story, and giving them a place in NT history.
Archives help enhance the perspective on any topic.
NTAS holds an amazing collection that researchers from all disciplines value highly for the insights these records provide. Our researchers are local, interstate and international. The community that we serve is this broad.
Archives play an essential role in the development of societies: you have to know where you have been to plan and map toward the future.
We at NTAS know how valuable we are to the community and the community that we serve tells us. Our passion and our belief in what we do keeps us doing it, and we try to impart that passion in everything we do.
Our collections are our history.
