Ask a librarian

If you have a question or are researching a topic related to the Northern Territory (NT) you can get help from Northern Territory Library staff.

Whether you are researching history, people, places or events, the Northern Territory Library staff can give you possible answers, research suggestions and relevant resources.

Library staff can also help you use equipment such as microfilm readers so you can do your research onsite or online.

There are several ways you can contact the library about your information query.

Online

You can input your NT related information query directly into the Online Enquiry System

Staff will endeavour to answer your question within five days. Complex queries will take longer.

Read the Northern Territory Library's Enquiry Service Standards.

Use the Ask link on to check on an existing question, enter a new query or to comment on the Enquiry Service.

Phone

You can contact the library with basic information queries via the phone.

If staff are unable to provide help at the time of your call they will guide you to use the online enquiry form, which lets staff research your query at a suitable time.

You can also contact the library to make an appointment with one of the Northern Territory Library staff who can guide you in doing your own research.

In person

The Northern Territory Library aims to provide services which will help you become an independent researcher. A variety of self-help tools are available that can guide you in your information search.

Face-to-face time with staff may be restricted depending on the level of client demand in the library.

Staff may need more time than is available to them at the time of your visit and may either:

  • guide you to use the online enquiry form
  • or be able to help you with information to allow you to make a start with your query.

If the information you need is not available at the Northern Territory Library, staff may be able to refer you to other organisations to find what you need.

Library staff are not able to provide lengthy or ongoing family history research help.

The Northern Territory Library is part of National and State Libraries Australasia (NSLA).

Read the Service Guidelines for Information and Research Services at NSLA Libraries.
