Library sector services

The library sector in the Northern Territory (NT) includes 32 public libraries, from the larger libraries at Darwin, Alice Springs, Palmerston and Katherine to smaller community libraries, including libraries in 16 Aboriginal communities.
The sector also includes tertiary education libraries, government department libraries and school libraries.

The range of services provided by the Northern Territory Library is being reviewed, but includes:

  • the provision of a Territory-wide Library Management System
  • operational funding for public libraries through the Public Library Funding Agreement
  • funding for public library collections, purchasing support, and management of a Territory wide eResources offer
  • professional learning opportunities
  • advice on library service provision.

Public Libraries Consultation

The Northern Territory Library is working with councils to plan for the future of public libraries in the Northern Territory.
Public libraries are a vital resource for local communities. They support literacy and education, community building and skills development through the provision of access to collections, technology, supportive library staff and safe and inclusive community spaces.
Library and technology environments have changed considerably within the last decade, with many new opportunities and challenges. In these changing times it is vital that libraries continue to remain relevant and responsive to their local community.

The Northern Territory Government is committed to developing a stronger network of NT public libraries and striving to provide equitable access for all Territorians to library services within the Northern Territory. This is why we are taking the time to work with Territorians to better understand community needs from their library services, so that we can better plan library services for the future.

The consultation period has now closed and the results of the consultation will be published in 2017.
