The Northern Territory (NT) has a multicultural population that includes people of more than 100 nationalities.
The 2011 census showed 25.4% of the population were born overseas and were mainly from North-West Europe and South East Asia.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people made up a further 26.5% of the total population. This is a higher proportion of Indigenous people than any other Australian state.
Multicultural policy in the NT is coordinated by the Office of Multicultural Affairs within the Department of the Chief Minister.
The NT’s first multicultural policy statement for migrant and ethnic Territorians, Building on the Territory's Diversity was launched in 2005.
The policy statement sets out the principles of valuing diversity, fair access and encouraging participation and mutual respect.
