Award-winning singer Gawurra opens National Tour in Alice Springs

Winner of four National Indigenous Music Awards and the 2016 Northern Territory Song of the Year Yolngu performer Stanley Gawurra Gaykamangu (Gawurra) begins his Australian National Tour at the Araluen Arts Centre.

“We are thrilled that Gawrura is starting his National Tour in Alice Springs,” said Dr Mark Crees, Director of the Araluen Cultural Precinct.

“Gawurra has a deeply resonant voice and musical sensitivity that transports audiences who are lucky enough to enjoy a live performance.  He demonstrates a powerful connection to country, to family, and to life in general.

“His song, Ratja Yaliyali, which was awarded the NT Song of the Year in the pop category last year, translates to Vine of Love and is a well-known Yolngu songline – when Yolngu people hear it they feel the spirit in their hearts.”

Gawurra’s album was awarded a 4.5 star review by Rolling Stone Music and his album went to number one on the iTunes world music chart in Australia on the day his second song debuted.

In 2016, Gawurra’s album Ratja Yaliyali was also nominated for the ARIA Award for Best World Music Album.

Member for Namatjira, Chansey Paech congratulated Gawurra on his success and praised the artist for embarking on his first national tour in Alice Springs.

“Gawurra is extremely passionate about passing on the importance of the Gupapungu language so it remains strong – something that comes across in the songs he sings and the stories he tells,” said Mr Paech.

Stanley Gawurra Gaykamangu hails from the Gove Peninsula in Arnhem Land and was a recent stand-out at the Sydney Festival 2017, winning over the audiences who were begging for more at the end of the show.

Gawurra performs at the Araluen Arts Centre on Saturday 11 February, 8pm.

Ticket prices are adults for $45.00, concession for $42.00 and Araluen Arts Centre Members $40.00.

Tickets are available online at or from the Araluen Box Office on (08) 8951 1122.
