The winner of the 2016 Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia, Andrey Gugnin, will perform a one-night-only recital at the Araluen Arts Centre on 2 September.

“We are delighted to have the Sydney International Piano Competition National Recital Tour come to Alice Springs for the very first time,” Director of the Araluen Cultural Precinct, Dr Mark Crees said.

“The competition is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2017 and we are excited to be presenting Andrey Gugnin from Russia after his stunning Sydney win last year."

The Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia was founded by the late Miss Claire Dan AM, OBE and Rex Hobcroft AM, in July 1977 and has since been held every four years.

The event provides a showcase platform for outstanding pianists from all over the world and assists with the development of their careers as concert artists.

In 2016, Mr Gugnin was the most impressive performer in the competition, taking out 4 prizes in addition to his overall first placing.

He will tour across Australia offering performances including Bach, Schubert, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky.

“Mr Gugnin is an in-demand performer, having performed across the world as a soloist, chamber musician and festival artist,” Dr Crees said.

Mr Gugnin graduated from the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory and has been a regular participant at the Mosco Philharmonic Society program for promising young artists.

Andrey Gugnin commented, “Australia has provided many pinnacle moments for me and my career. It’s a pleasure having the opportunity to work with the Sydney International Piano Competition again and to play for audiences across this beautiful country over two months.”

The National Recital Series showcases some of the Sydney International Piano Competition’s most highly regarded artists around the country.

The Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia’s Andrey Gugnin will be live onstage at the Araluen Arts Centre on Saturday 2 September at 8.00pm.

Ticket prices are $45.00 for adults, $42.00 for concession and $40.00 for Araluen Arts Centre Members. Tickets are available online at www.araluenartscentre.nt.gov.au or from the Araluen Box Office on (08) 8951 1122.
