The Araluen Arts Centre is pleased to present Boyd Meets Girl - an exciting guitar and cello duo performing Friday 22 September.

“A diverse and enthralling mix of works from the baroque through to the modern day, Boyd Meets Girl pairs Australian classical guitarist Rupert Boyd with American cellist Laura Metcalf, both respected soloists in their own right, and we can’t wait to have them perform for the first time in Alice Springs,” Director of the Araluen Cultural Precinct, Dr Mark Crees said.

Boyd and Metcalf are married and live in Manhattan, New York City, but only perform together a few times a year as they maintain busy performing schedules separately.

The “truly evocative” Boyd (Classical Guitar Magazine) and the “brilliant” Metcalfe (Gramophone Magazine) have performed throughout the United States, Australia, India and Nepal.

Their self-titled debut recording includes works by J.S. Bach, Astor Piazzolla, Manuel de Falla, the Australian composer Ross Edwards, and a number of arrangements by the duo of their favourite works from the classical music canon.

"Boyd Meets Girl’s first album has been reviewed as containing stunningly beautiful arrangements and exceptional performances; their live performance will feature selections from the album which is released in October of this year," Dr Crees said.

“One of the remarkable pieces that the duo will play is Arafura Arioso, written about the Arafura Sea, which was written by Australian composer Ross Edwards, and arranged especially for Boyd Meets Girl.”

Edwards describe the piece as a portrayal of the ‘calm and reflective' nature of the Northern Territory, with the music 'floating mysteriously on the balmy tropical air'.

The performance will also include Gabriel Faure’s Pavane in a reduction from the orchestral score and an arrangement of Michael Jackson’s Human Nature from the 1982 bestselling album, Thriller.

Boyd Meets Girl will be live onstage at the Araluen Arts Centre on Friday 22 September at 8.00pm.

Ticket prices are $39.00 for adults, $35.00 for concession and $32.00 for Araluen Arts Centre Members.

Tickets are available online at www.araluenartscentre.nt.gov.au or from the Araluen Box Office on (08) 8951 1122.
